In 1890, he commanded the Ajax, a wooden steam schooner.

25 Sep 1890 in an article in The Coast mail it stated that: Capt. J. Roberts, of the stearner Emily, came up from San Francisco last week and is now with his vessel at the Porter mill. After he left the city he hoard of the loss of tho steamer and ran into Shelter Cove, arriving there at 4 p. m. on Saturday, and landing the crew and passengers all on shore. He remained with them three or four hours. The first man he met on the beach was the captain of the Ajax and asked him of the disaster.
