01 Sep 1871 in an article in The new Northwest of Portland, Oregon it stated that: have been recovered, to the wounded were brought to the city again, has since died. The scene was appalling and heart rending. Wider grief has seldom been witnessed. Many of the passengers were children. Captain Eaton swam some distance with both legs broken. A boat reached him just too late, and he went down. The two pilots and all the firemen were killed. The engineer’s wife is injured. It Is Impossible to correctly estimate the loss of lives.
