In an article in The Daily Morning Astorian of Astoria, Oregon on October 24, 1889 it states that: The steamer Cosmopolis, which arrived at San Francisco last Tuesday from Gray’s harbor, met with rough weather on her way down. Captain Dettmers reports that when off Cape Blanco the steamer’s shaft was bent, and three blades of her propeller were broken off by heavy seas. She was also short of coal, and had to beat her way down in her disabled condition against a strong head wind.
