In an article in The Daily Astorian of Astoria, Oregon on December 15, 1882 it states that: Captain Gage, formerly of the barkentine Portland, has been assigned to the command of the ship City of Brooklyn, at British Columbia, recently purchased by Simpson Brothers. About January 1st will remove my .Stove and Tin-shop into the rooms now occupied by .Joe Charters’ barber shop, on Chenaiiius street.

In 1883 – 1884, he commanded the Beda a wooden steam schooner.
