I was sleeping at a friend’s house for the first time in their guest bedroom. We had arrived late at night and after visiting for a few hours we went to bed. During the course of the evening the host informed us of his time in Japan, serving in the military. He had retired and brought his Japanese bride home to San Diego. Her family were garden specialists. She had brought with her some Bonsai trees and other plants to build a garden in their new home. From this sampling and her memories they built a meditation garden over the course of twenty years. When I went to sleep, I told myself to be sure to look out my window in the daylight to view the garden.

The next day, with bright sunlight filtering through the white floor legnth curtains I arose. Pulling the plastic wand to open the curtains…
